Advanced Riding

This course is designed for people who already have a good knowledge and skill of riding a motorcycle, but wish to take it to the next level and become an advanced rider by taking the test at one of the advanced governing bodies.

Lesson Plan

In order to take the advanced riding test you will be required to learn certain riding methods to pass the tests

Key Areas Covered in On-Road Lessons

🏍 1️⃣ Advanced Observation & Planning

✅ Scanning ahead to spot hazards early (traffic, road surfaces, pedestrians, weather conditions).
✅ Using "What if?" thinking to anticipate risks and plan safe responses.
✅ Rear Observations – Using mirrors and life-savers to stay aware of traffic behind.

🏍 2️⃣ The "System of Motorcycle Control" (IPSGA)

IAM teaches a systematic approach to riding, called IPSGA:

📌 I – Information: Take in road signs, hazards, and traffic movements.
📌 P – Position: Place yourself for maximum vision, safety, and smooth cornering.
📌 S – Speed: Adjust your speed according to road conditions and hazards.
📌 G – Gear: Select the right gear for smooth acceleration out of a hazard.
📌 A – Acceleration: Apply throttle smoothly and progressively when safe.

🏍 3️⃣ Cornering & Road Positioning

✅ The “Limit Point” Technique – Understanding how far ahead you can see and adjusting speed accordingly.
✅ Using the full width of your lane for maximum stability and vision.
✅ Slow in, fast out – Controlling speed into a bend and accelerating out safely.

🏍 4️⃣ Safe Overtaking

✅ Planning safe and legal overtakes.
✅ Judging oncoming traffic distance.
✅ Positioning before the overtake to see ahead and be seen.

🏍 5️⃣ Making Progress (Riding Efficiently & Smoothly)

✅ Riding to the speed limit safely (not too slow or too fast).
✅ Avoiding unnecessary braking with smooth throttle control.
✅ Balancing safety and efficiency to make good progress.

🏍 6️⃣ Filtering & Urban Riding

✅ When and where to filter safely in traffic.
✅ Maintaining good visibility and escape routes.
✅ Avoiding blind spots of cars, buses, and lorries.

🏍 7️⃣ Motorway & Dual Carriageway Riding

✅ Safe lane changes with proper rear observation.
✅ Maintaining a safe following distance.
✅ Using acceleration lanes and judging gaps when merging.

🏍 8️⃣ Slow-Speed Control

✅ Smooth clutch and throttle control for U-turns, filtering, and junctions.
✅ Using rear brake to maintain stability at slow speeds.

How Lessons Work

  • You ride with an instructor who follows and assesses your riding.

  • They give real-time feedback and stop at intervals for coaching.

  • Lessons are progressive, meaning you focus on improving weak areas each time.

Final  Test Preparation

✅ You’ll have a mock advanced test with feedback.
✅ The actual governing body test lasts 90 minutes with a trained examiner.
